Film description

Paris, Texas, which premiered 30 years ago this year, was Wim Wenders’ breakthrough film: his greatest artistic success, the best measure of which was the Palme d’Or that it brought him Cannes, and it was also a summation of his lengthy fascination with the United States. The German director examines America through the eyes of a man who has lost his memory and his identity, a kind of Kaspar Hauser who, in the film’s first scene, suddenly appears in the desert. The main protagonist gets to know his country once again: unpopulated frontiers, crowded freeways, and heavenly suburbs, great spaces that take many days to cross. He also has to reach beyond the specifics of this place to a universal experience: getting to know one’s past, confronting feelings of guilt, and seeking forgiveness. The slow narrative and beautiful cinematography by Robby Müller give his American odyssey a dreamlike quality.

Information about director

Wim Wenders

Born in 1945, Wim Wenders spent quite a bit of time searching for his path in life: he studied Medicine and Philosophy and left for Paris in order to become a painter. In time, however, he decided on cinema, beginning his studies at a film school in Munich. Along with Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Werner Herzog, he was a part of a movement of young artists who renewed and introduced postwar German cinema to European salons. Wenders makes both feature and documentary films. His favorite director is Yasujiro Ozu.
