Selling a Text – On the Freedom of Film Critics

Film criticism involves constant discussions, intellectual debates, contexts, and interpretations. But is that all? We are going to be talking about the freedom of film critics, where film marketing ends and original reviews begin. When does a critic have more creative freedom? As a correspondent at an international festival or also when writing a review about a film premiere? How do they manage under market conditions when distributors and the media are so closely connected? What sort of articles do editors (or others placing orders) want? What do today’s readers expect? Does blogging make it easier to achieve professional and financial success? How much freedom do market conditions allow? The winners of the Krzysztof Mętrak Competition staked everything on the substantive and artistic merits of their work. Let us see for ourselves whether they are satisfied with their choices. In continuing the discussions about film criticism from the Kamera Akcja Festival, Michał Pabiś-Orzeszyna will be moderating the debate. Among the guests will be this year’s winner, Błażej Hrapkowicz, as well as Paweł T. Felis, Kaja Klimek, and Adam Kruk.

The organizer of the discussion panel is the KAMERA AKCJA Film Critics Festival.

18th Krzysztof Mętrak Award Competition

The jury for the 18th Krzysztof Mętrak Award Competition for young film critics included: Marcin Adamczak, Darek Arest, Michał Chaciński, Marek Hendrykowski Agnieszka Jakimiak, Adam Kruk, Artur Majer, Michał Oleszczyk, Radosław Osiński, Anna Osmólska-Mętrak (chair), Jakub Socha, and Janusz Zaorski. After becoming familiar with the work of the 81 participants, they unanimously decided on the following award winners at a meeting on April 25, 2014:

The GRAND PRIX, an original statue by Adam Myjak and 10,000 PLN, was awarded to:

BŁAŻEJ HRAPKOWICZ – for the perfection of his work, flexibility in his choice of subjects, clarity of expression, and consistent critical prose in which esthetic and philosophical issues are intertwined in a non-intrusive and mature manner.

2nd Prize, 5,000 PLN

ANKA HERBUT – for a collection of articles that seduce the reader with their sophisticated style and erudition, the reading of which is like the pleasure of an intellectual adventure.

3rd Prize, 2,500 PLN

JAKUB WENCEL – for his daring interpretation of cinema classics, clarity of expression and erudition, allowing the author to see films from angles that are not so obvious.

The jury also selected the following honorable mentions:

BARTOSZ CZARTORYSKI – for his article "Busem do Nibylandii" (The Bus to Neverland), which stimulates the intellect and the imagination with knowledge about the history and context of the hippy movement and counterculture in cinema.

ŁUKASZ KNAP – for his article about the creative work of Abdellatif Kechiche, in which he combines biography, esthetics, and the thematic motifs of his creativity, resulting in an exemplary portrait of this outstanding contemporary filmmaker.

JAKUB POPIELECKI – for his stylistic freedom and flexibility of thought, making it possible to conduct a fruitful investigation into the case of the missing cinematic MacGuffin.

MARCIN STACHOWICZ – for his not-so-obvious perspective, original subjects, and bold demands for a place for bad taste in Polish cinema.

MARTA STAŃCZYK – for her article "Arthouse", a brilliant, ironic diagnosis of the syndrome of snobbism among both the makers and viewers of contemporary artistic cinema.

The competition was co-organized by the Polish Film Institute, which provided the funding for all of the monetary awards.

The awards ceremony will take place during the 14th T-Mobile New Horizons International Film Festival in Wrocław, on July 25 at 7:15 p.m. at New Horizons Cinema (Theater 7). The ceremony will be accompanied by a screening of Raiders of the Lost Ark (Steven Spielberg / USA 1981 / 115’).
