Curse of Snakes Valley – Janusz Król: installation

24.07 – 3.08, 10.00 - 00.00

Kino Nowe Horyzonty, first floor

Visitors climbing the stairs in the New Horizons Cinema may be frightened by the sight of a huge snake winding its way up one of the columns. Not to fear, it is part of an installation by Janusz Król, a pioneer of Polish special effects, and connected with this year’s New Horizons of Film Language program. In this year’s program, the cult film Curse of Snakes Valley will be screened (KNH 2, 27.07, 12.45). A Polish-Soviet response to “New Adventure Cinema,” it stars Krzysztof Kolberger and Ewa Sałacka, who are attacked in a Vietnamese temple by laser-shooting statues and an enormous reptile. The animatronics in the picture were created by Janusz Król, who also made the robots in Mister Kleks in Space, the golem in Mister Samochodzik and the Secrets of Prague, and the snake in The legend of the White Horse. He is a master and an artisan of a handcrafting workshop – of latex masks, plastic skulls and furry animals, some of which will find a place in the installation carefully prepared by the artist. You are especially invited to meetings (before and after the screening of Curse of Snakes Valley) with this inventor and collector, who is constantly expanding his collection of mechanisms used in old cinemas (projectors, lamps, organs, cutting tables) and his own projects in a manor outside Wrocław. Discussions with Janusz Król are sure to be full of juicy anecdotes from the sets of Polish films from the 80s and 90s, in which he bravely blazed the trails of special effects.
