14th T-Mobile NH (ALE KINO+): "Jauja" by Lisandro Alonso

Jauja is a mythical land of abundance and happiness. Throughout the centuries, countless expeditions have sought the gates to Jauja, and the legend has grown, encompassing an ever-greater area to explore. The one thing that is for sure is that anyone who attempts to find this earthly paradise usually gets lost along the way. Lisandro Alonso, one of Argentina’s most radical directors, along with actor Viggo Mortensen and co-screenwriter and poet Fabián Casas, strays from the path of poetic naturalism in the direction of magical realism. In 1882, during the Patagonian conquest, Danish Captain Gunnar Dinesen, working for the army, is carrying out engineering works in the desert. His 15-year-old daughter, Ingeborg, falls in love and runs away with a young soldier. He sets off to find her. The desert becomes a stage where people, animals, and spirits criss-cross each other’s path, and the conflicting interests of communities, individuals, and worlds come to the fore. In static, minimalistic shots, Alonso brings to an end  the desperate struggle of a man trapped in the confines of history and his own desires. (Agnieszka Szeffel)

Lisandro Alonso

One of the most interesting Argentinean directors of the past 20 years, a representative of the school of poetic naturalism. Lisandro Alonso was born in Buenos Aires in 1975, where he studied at the Universidad del Cine, where he directed, along with Catriel Vildosola, his first short film in 1995, Dos en la Vereda (1995). Following his studies, he worked on the sets of both short and feature films as an assistant sound engineer. He then returned to directing and, in 2001, made his feature-film debut with La Libertad, which was part of the program at Cannes (Un Certain Regard). His subsequent films, Los Muertos (2004) and Fantasma (2006), were also screened in Cannes (Quinzaine des Réalisateurs). In 2003, he founded his own production company, 4L. He was a guest at New Horizons in 2006.
