Panorama
The Panorama section will once again feature films by the masters of artistic cinema, as well as new discoveries, award-winning films from festivals big and small, including the Spanish winner of the Golden Leopard at Locarno, Albert Serry’s Story of My Death (Història de la meva mort), an extraordinary portrait of the Age of the Enlightenment and Romanticism, whose starting point is a meeting between Casanova and Dracula. The section will feature the latest works by some of the masters of Asian cinema. Ki-duk Kim’s film Moebius, a recent award winner at the festival in Venice, again combines symbolism, poetry, and cruelty in one of the director’s most controversial films (which has been censored in South Korea). Tsai Ming-liang, who was the subject of a retrospective at New Horizons in 2009, will invite audiences in Wrocław to his meditative Journey to the West, which tells the story of a Buddhist monk’s trip to Marseilles, where he is followed by … Denis Lavant, the favorite actor of Leos Carax (most recently in Holy Motors). One of the hits at this year’s festival may be the most recent work by Alejandro Jodorowsky, a genius of the surreal. Wrocław audiences will have an opportunity to watch The Dance of Reality, a visionary, dreamlike autobiopic of this Chilean filmmaker. The section will also feature the latest works of some of the masters of French cinema. Bertrand Tavernier’s The French Minister is a perverse political comedy that won the award for best screenplay at the festival in San Sebastian. Documentary master Claude Lanzmann (maker of the legendary Shoah) presents The Last of the Unjust, in which he returns to the subject of the Holocaust, this time telling the story of Benjamin Murmelstein, president of the Jewish Council at Theresienstadt, who had to negotiate with Adolf Eichmann throughout the entire period of World War II. The Panorama section will also feature the Mexican film To Kill a Man, a predatory, disturbing, emotional portrait of a man who is forced to make desperate decisions in order to protect his family. Directed by Alejandro Fernández Almendras, the film captured the grand prize in the international competition at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. |
